NHL Releases New Form-Fitting Rules Video
At long last, the NHL has finally released an official video on their website that features Kay Whitmore explaining the new form-fitting rules and regulations for goalie leg pads.
We did our best to shed light on these new restrictions and system of measurement throughout the summer, but the limited information available from the NHL made it very difficult. It took until September 12 for the NHL to finally post the official language for the new rules. Back on June 21, we introduced to our readers the idea of the new form-fitting rules. A few days earlier, on June 18, we first learned that the NHL Competition Committe approved the form-fitting rules.
So as you can see, this video sheds a lot of light on the new system of leg pad measurement known as Limiting Distance Size.
This is the first time anyone outside of the NHL has seen the official Limiting Distance Gauge and we are quite impressed. This mechanism was very interesting to absorb while watching the video and at first glance is quite intriguing. The entire leg pad is basically strapped to this gauge and then measured to make sure it matches up with the goalie’s appropriate LDS.
Enjoy this video and let us know your thoughts on the Limiting Distance Size dynamic. As you will see, a long-legged goalie like Pekka Rinne could wear even longer pads than the previous 38-inch limit that was in place for the past five years.
