Every Monday during the season, goalie specialist and founder of The Goalie Guild Justin Goldman will provide you with an in-depth analysis of fantasy goaltenders in NHL.com’s weekly segment: “In the Cage.” From updated goalie rankings to guys you should keep a close eye on and much more, Goldman will be your fantasy goalie expert all season long.
Live Notebook: Howard vs. Price
Jan 25th
Please click below to join my next Live Scouting Blog, which will evaluate Jimmy Howard and Carey Price in tonight’s game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings. Howard enters tonight’s game with a 30-10-1 record, a 1.95 goals-against average, and a .926 save percentage. Price is 16-17-8 with a 2.41 GAA and .914 SV%.
Feel free to follow along as a reader to get authentic and insightful analysis on both goaltenders in tonight’s game. You can also post comments or ask goalie-related (fantasy or otherwise) questions during intermissions, and I will do my best to answer them.
Please keep in mind that this is not a live chat room, but rather a live notebook for Goldman to publish thoughts, notes and evaluations on different goaltenders. Some comments may not be approved, but you are still encouraged to partake in discussions during intermissions.
Remember that you can find all of tonight’s starting goalies at my sister site, GoaliePost! I hope to see some of you join this experimental Live Scouting Blog and look forward to tonight’s game between the Red Wings and Canadiens.

The Goalie Guild apprentice Antoine Brosseau is a bright young goaltender from Montréal, Québec with over 12 years of experience in goal. He’s currently an undergraduate student at Concordia University, and a Junior Financial Analyst for Avenue Capital Markets. He trains with the Concordia Stingers goalie coach, all while working in the high-pressure field of investing. As he continues to hone his scouting skills with The Goalie Guild, he’ll be providing readers with occasional reports and updates on goaltenders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
My Thoughts on Brian Elliott and Ben Bishop
Jan 18th
When it comes to Brian Elliott, I can safely say that he has worked extremely hard to earn a new contract extension, and that he totally deserves one. The Blues signed him to a new two-year deal today, one that will see him earn $1.7 million next season, then $1.9 million in the 2013-14 season. It’s a cap hit of just $1.8 million, a number that falls well within the “bargain” category for the Blues.
The Pipeline Show: Backups and Canadians
Jan 18th
Guy Flaming and Dean Millard from The Pipeline Show are two very knowledgeable hockey scouts, so whenever I get a chance to be a guest on their show, I get really excited. Why? Because I know they’re going to ask hard-hitting goalie questions that force me to bring my best insights and analysis to their listeners.
My Perspective on Ryan Miller’s Struggles
Jan 17th
When expectations are extremely high, an elite goalie’s mindset must reach a delicate balance on a daily basis. That delicate balance has to be centered around one thing; an intense focus on tracking and stopping pucks.
PadsTracker Update: Peter Budaj
Jan 16th
Last night in Montreal, Canadien’s goaltender Peter Budaj unveiled his second set of new pads in less than a week. Budaj is the latest goalie to wear the new Bauer TotalOne pads and gloves. The set is white based, with red and blue accents on the glove and pad faces. Budaj is the first NHL goalie to wear the one-piece cuff version of the TotalOne glove. A notable change from his previous Bauer One100 pads, the outer roll on the pads no longer have any external breaks. Budaj was one of the few goalies to have a double break in the outer roll on his One100 pads. A likely explanation for this change would be the new user adjustable flex system in the TotalOne leg pads. Check out the full setup here, courtesy of the Goalie Guild’s PadsTracker!
